This summer, PLUS Communications hosted its annual Request for Proposal (RFP) project, a hands-on training initiative that immerses associates and summer fellows in the new business process. The goal: give our emerging talent authentic, high-pressure experience in policy strategy, persuasive communication and client pitching.
Over six fast-paced weeks, participants stepped into the role of public affairs strategists, tasked with creating detailed proposals and persuasive pitches based on a theoretical bill allowing self-driving cars on D.C. streets. Five teams considered how to shape the policy landscape, engage stakeholders and influence public opinion on emerging transportation technology.
The project began with a comprehensive briefing on the legislative landscape, key stakeholders and case studies from cities already deploying autonomous vehicles. Equipped with this context, each team was paired with two of PLUS’ managing directors who served as coaches. These mentors – veterans of high-stakes legislative and public affairs work – guided participants throughout the process of writing responses to the RFP and building compelling pitch decks.
Throughout the summer, teams met regularly to collaborate, refine their proposals and rehearse their presentations.
In the final stage, each team presented their pitch to a panel of three PLUS partners, who acted as “the client.” Following each presentation, teams received specific, actionable feedback, highlighting their strengths and offering constructive advice for future new business projects.
The RFP project remains a cornerstone of PLUS Communications’ professional development program, blending real-world policy scenarios with mentorship and collaboration. This year’s participants walked away with sharpened skills, a deeper understanding of legislative strategy and firsthand experience in tackling complex public affairs challenges – exactly the kind of preparation needed for shaping conversations that matter.
All teams rose to the occasion and delivered creative, thoughtful work. Congratulations to Julia Caldicott, Colette Barth, Cooper Dick and Mallory Middendorff, who ultimately took home the win and some PLUS swag!
