PLUS Communications Wins Two PRWeek Awards

March 16, 2018

Telling the “We Are Sikhs” Story

PLUS Communications is honored to have received PRWeek’s Best for a Cause award for the National Sikh Campaign’s “We Are Sikhs” initiative. Judged by a panel of our peers, this award represents one of the highest accolades in the PR industry.

Learn more about how we advanced a positive message and helped educate Americans about what it really means to be Sikh:

We worked with the National Sikh Campaign to clear misconceptions and biases about the religion, managing a prominent earned media, grassroots and advertising campaign. To effectively tell the We Are Sikhs story and gain momentum around the country, PLUS Communications managed a national, multiplatform launch – including national TV and digital ads, earned media coverage in national outlets, grassroots and surrogate activation and social media engagement.

After six short months, we informed millions of Americans through hundreds of earned media placements, drove an online conversation that reached more than 5.5 million voters and gained the attention of many of Washington’s most influential organizations.

But the ultimate goal of the campaign was to provoke a thoughtful conversation that made a measurable change in the way Americans perceive their Sikh neighbors. Post-campaign polling in Fresno – where we ran a concentrated, comprehensive campaign in response to a pattern of hate crimes against Sikh Americans – unequivocally showed that we moved the dial in a meaningful way:

We are proud to support the National Sikh Campaign and to be recognized by industry leaders for our work on this important cause.

Best in Public Affairs: FWD.us and PLUS Communications Secure Bipartisan Support to Drive Change of the Louisiana Criminal Justice System

Learn more about our work in Louisiana here:

Having worked closely with FWD.us since 2013, PLUS Communications was honored to be chosen by FWD.us to lead their criminal justice reform efforts in Louisiana. At the time, FWD.us, a national bipartisan advocacy organization founded in 2013 by Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg and others in the tech and business communities, was transitioning from a single-issue organization focused on national immigration reform to a dual-issue organization that also focused on state-based criminal justice reform.

With the highest imprisonment rate in the world (double the U.S. average), Louisiana incarcerates 35,700 people – or 816 for every 100,000 residents. More than 7,000 prisoners in Louisiana have already spent more than 10 years behind bars. FWD.us saw Louisiana as an opportunity to join bipartisan coalition partners to pass meaningful criminal justice reform that would give many inmates a second chance and opportunity to pursue the American Dream.

PLUS Communications strategy was straightforward: Pressure state lawmakers with a robust coalition of supporters, aggressive earned media campaign, educational and community events, social media engagement and direct lobbying.

As a result, Democratic Governor John Bel Edwards signed 10 criminal justice reform bills into law in June 2017 surrounded by a bipartisan group of lawmakers and coalition partners – lauded as a historic achievement.
